Support for the Spouse
"Caring for a spouse with physical and mental problems, and where family violence and alcohol abuse are prevalent in these marriages, has been shown to have a negative impact on the partner" (Australian Psychologist, 2009).
NUMBER ONE AND MOST IMPORTANT
Take Care of Yourself!!!
Physically
Emotionally
Mentally
Spiritually
Cherish and Love you First!!!!
Loving yourself first will keep you grounded. This is extremely important as you will be unable to help or assist anyone if you develop what is known as vicarious traumatization, or secondary PTSD. This is very common, so be aware of the affects PTSD can have on you. Of course you love your spouse, and will do anything to help. Although, once you become victimized by PTSD and depression--you will become part of the existing problem. Loving yourself first will provide you with the unconditional love you need to support your family in the best possible way.
REMEMBER-Your spouse's reactions, outbursts of rage, or whatever symptoms exist at any given time,
is not a reflection of you.
All of our experiences shape us, hopefully for the best. In the case of war, our men and women are forever changed, as they will never be who they were before such a traumatic, inhumane experience of life. Morals and values have been integrated into our minds since birth. When death and violence challenge our belief systems, our soul and spirit become very confused. No one is to blame, as Americans are not trained like the warriors in ancient history. For example, Romans and Greeks were born to be Warriors, trained and treated as such throughout their lives. We are not, therefore, it is important to impliment coping skills for everyone involved in the situation.
